Veteran actress Maritoni Fernandez believes that barley can help save lives. Although this sounds like a typical statement from a celebrity who is hawking a product, Maritoni’s faith in barley stems from her recent personal battle with cancer. She says that the herbal supplement had helped her recover from the dreaded disease, so it is the gospel that she now wants to spread through her new business.
She recalls: “I discovered barley when I was very ill with cancer in the states. I had just finished my first chemotherapy series and landed in a hospital because I had contracted a virus. I was put in reverse isolation, and while in the ICU, all I had was my laptop. I then did research on |

how to naturally increase my WBC (white blood cell) levels and that’s when I discovered the healing properties of young barley powder”.
After her cancer went into remission, Fernandez thought of sharing the benefits of the barley with everyone by putting up an herbal supplements business centered on young barley. Fernandez found two companies that agreed to market the product locally with her as endorser. But towards the end of 2008, after three years under this arrangement, she decided to go on her own with her own brand of barley-based food supplements.
She explains that decision: “I gradually learned the ropes of selling the product during the time that I was working with the two companies that previously marketed the product in the Philippines, so last year, I set aside P1 million to start my own company, Herb-All Organic Food Supplements”.
This early, the sales performance of her barley products has been encouraging. “Right now, we are selling 2,000 boxes a month,” she says. “Our ultimate goal is to make it 10,000. Our prices are
P1, 000 for a box of 60 capsules, and P1, 000 for 15 sachet juice packs”.
“We do direct retailing of our Herb-All brand through our kiosk at Festival Mall in Alabang
[in Muntinlupa City], and we do direct selling of our Barley Pure C brand through the Sante group”. She says.
Fernandez sees a huge potential in her line of business.
“I want to keep expanding the distribution of our products so it can reach every Filipino in our country,” she says. “I see it as a bridge between the rich and the poor and as a means for educating them on how to live healthier lives”. |
